Street Fighter II Turns 20 Today
Twenty years ago today, a little game called Tough II first successful its arcade debut.
In now's installment of the "belly laugh, I feel old" chronicles: Capcom has reminded us every that the first Street Fighter II machines first hit arcades today in March 1991. This was plain ol' flavorer Street Attack aircraft II, non Champion Edition or Super or Turbo or Super Turbo.
It's rugged to overvaluation just how influential Street Fighter II actually was. This one game defined the fighting game genre for decades to come, and umteen of the conventions the genre uses today – topnotch moves, health parallel bars, jazz group string section – originated here.
It would march on to spawn many imitators, many of which were pale shadows of the germinal (looking you, Sou Kombat). Information technology would also become same of the virtually re-released games in history.
I used to check up on to my friend's household to wager it on his SNES almost every day later on school. His older brother never told Maine how to throw a fireball, so I e'er played arsenic Chun-Li since you could do her lightning kick by just mashing the buttons. What a jerk that guy was, seriously.
Happy birthday, Tough II. You defined a genre and created a caption. In your honor, let's all listen to Guile's theme. Or Cognizance's root word. Or Ryu's theme. OR – you have intercourse what? Man, this game had more or less corking music.
